Rapper and actor Gene “Groove” Allen dies aged 63

Rapper and actor Gene “Groove” Allen, known for his role in What’s Love Got to Do With It? has reportedly died aged 63.

The star is said to have passed away in his Maryland home on Wednesday (Thursday in Australia), according to TMZ.

The outlet claims to have heard the news from a family member, who says that the death was a result of a medical emergency and came as a “complete shock” to the family.

Along with his role in the Tina Turner biopic, the actor is also known for his role in the 1990 comedy film House Party and its sequel.

He also played a street photographer in the 1992 film Boomerang, starring alongside Eddie Murphy, Robin Givens and Halle Berry.

After his film career, Allen went on to do voiceover work and radio gigs.

Allen actually got his start in the entertainment industry as a rapper, being part of the ’80s hip-hop trio Groove B. Chill alongside Daryl “Chill” Mitchell and Belal “DJ Belal” Miller.

The group were considered hip-hop pioneers when they got their start in the Bronx, and put out songs such as Hip Hop Music, Why Me, and Swingin’ Single.

It seems Allen continued his passion for music, regularly performing gigs and posting information and videos from them on his Instagram profile.

The star even uploaded a snippet of himself performing his new song Let It Breathe to a crowd just four days ago, alongside the caption, “2025!!! I aint playing…”, ready to take on the new year.

Fans shared their condolences on his most recent post.
