Meta has told the Brazilian government that it doesn’t yet have to worry about the end of fact checkers in its country because it is only removing them in the United States for the time being.
Brazilian publication Globo reports that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, told Brazil’s Office of the Attorney General that its planned content moderation changes are only occurring in the U.S.
What’s more, it said that its plan to replace fact checkers with an X-style “community notes” system was also being relegated solely to the U.S. for the time being and that it would test the system before bringing it to other countries.

The social media giant also claimed that it’s “committed to respecting human rights,” while emphasizing a commitment to “freedom of expression, the fundamental human right that permits the exercise of many other rights.” Meta also committed that it would continue to remove content that incites violence or that has “plausible threats to public or personal safety.”
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has drawn heavy criticism when he revealed that his platforms will be cutting fact checkers, a move that has coincided with an apparent rightward shift at the company in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s victory this past fall.
